Company History

Rock Solid Images was formed in 1998 through the merger of PetroSoft® Inc., Seismic Research Corporation and The Discovery Bay Company. Below is some history about the 3 companies that started Rock Solid Images.

seismic researchDr. M. Turhan Taner founded Seismic Research Corporation in 1980, with a brief to develop advanced seismic data processing technologies. Dr. Taner is one of our industry's most respected geophysicists. He was a cofounder of Seismic Computing Corporation, which later became Seiscom Delta Inc. Dr Taner served as Chairman of the Board and Senior Vice-president of Research of Seiscom until he left to form Seismic Research Corporation where he served as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer. Dr. Taner is the author of numerous scientific papers and is an honorary lifetime member of both the SEG, EAGE and GSH. Dr. holds the Maurice Ewing Medal from SEG and the Erasmus Award from EAGE

SRC developed a considerable range of software tools designed for use in conjunction with commercial seismic processing software. These products addresed processing needs such as amplitude preservation, refraction-static computation, wavelet processing and imaging. In 1996, Dr. Taner formed the Seismic Attribute Consortium which is continued as the Lithology and Fluid Project.

petrosoft logoPetroSoft was an outgrowth of a successful research project at Stanford University in the field of rock physics. Several of the company founders (Joel Walls, Gary Mavko, Jack Dvorkin and Amos Nur) are former or current members of this group called the Stanford Rock and Borehole Geophysics (SRB) Project. Azary Smotrich, formerly senior software engineer for Sun MicroSystems, is the primary developer of petrophysics software.

PetroSoft began as a research project to create a convenient rock physics software application. This application became known as PetroTools and development was guided by a group of 20 major exploration and production companies. PetroTools was intended for anyone doing seismic modeling, AVO interpretation, seismic production monitoring, or reservoir description and is the basis of iMOSS.

discovery bayThe Discovery Bay Company (DBC) was formed by J. Todd Mitchell and Eugene Lichman in 1992, with a strategic plan to develop, market, and support a new software platform for seismic data analysis. From its inception, DBC gave the highest priority to developing software architecture that delivers the most sophisticated seismic data access available. DBC software accessed seismic data in virtually any documentable format; that allows interpreters to analyze both pre-stack and post-stack data in the same environment. On a foundation of advanced data access, DBC built a suite of seismic analysis programs and algorithms with an emphasis on direct hydrocarbon indication, velocity analysis, and enhanced seismic imaging.
